Fallen Arches and Over-Pronation

Fallen arches should not be confused with 'flat feet'. “Flat feet” is a rare condition that affects only about 5% of the population. Fallen arches on the other hand (also called “over-pronation”) are very common. Our feet have a natural shock-absorbing mechanism called pronation and supination. However, some people have a high arch and their feet are quite rigid which makes them unable to absorb shock. Majority of population has a normal arch (or low arch). Only 5-10% of us have a high arch!

In many cases people with a 'normal- to-low' arch also suffer from 'over-pronation.' This may happen during walking, running or standing. With every step the person takes their arches collapse and their ankles roll inwards which is called over-pronation. Do note that Pronation itself is not wrong. To pronate and supinate as we walk is a part of our gait. Pronation (rolling in) is a shock absorbing process and supination (rolling out) propels our feet forward.

It is over-pronation that is not healthy for our feet. This occurs when we pronate too far and too long. This doesn’t give our foot a chance to 'recover' and supinate.

Thus, over-pronation hampers our natural gait and walking pattern. It also causes imbalance in our feet that leads to wear and tear in other parts of our body as well. If let unheeded, over-pronation or excess pronation may lead to biomechanical issues other than the following foot complaints:

  • Heel pain
  • Heel Spurs
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Shin Splints
  • Knee Pain
  • Low Back Pain

Over-Pronation – Treatment

Orthotic inserts can treat over-pronation and fallen arches effectively. Orthotics insoles can be personalized or custom-made and are frequently prescribed by foot specialists (podiatrists).

You can also use “pre-made foot orthotic” as most people do. They too just like you do not require expensive custom-made orthotics. You can easily combat excess pronation with readymade orthotics insoles unless you suffer from a specific medical condition of the foot.
