Hopping on the affected foot: if this significantly worsens sharp, localized pain, that’s more consistent with a possible stress fracture and warrants medical evaluation rather than continuing to test it yourself. This isn’t a diagnostic tool, just a signal that professional imaging is the right next step rather than home treatment.

Why the Distinction Matters So Much

Continuing normal activity on metatarsalgia, while not ideal, generally doesn’t cause serious harm, supportive insoles and activity modification typically improve it over time. Continuing normal activity on an undiagnosed stress fracture, however, can allow the crack to worsen, potentially progressing to a complete fracture that requires a much longer recovery, sometimes involving a walking boot or, in more severe cases, more significant intervention. Seek a proper evaluation, which may include an X-ray or other imaging, if you notice:

  • Pain that persists at rest or wakes you at night
